Pylons and Cables
These mirror image structures replaced the 6th Viaduct, built in 1908, that stretched 2,780 feet across the valley. Ramps provided access to Canal Street and the US Post Office. Today the Post Office (soon to be closed) is still reached by bridge, but Canal Street is reached at a grade crossing.
The claim has been made that the north and south 6th St. Viaduct bridges are the first cable stayed bridges in Wisconsin.
Not so, at least, according to the Wisconsin DOT. Wis DOT says the first cable stayed bridge in the United States is a cable stayed pedestrian bridge in Menomonee Falls, Waukesha County, Wisconsin.
The pylons are 142' tall.
