FROM PA HISTORIC BRIDGE DATA:
The bridge carries a 2 lane street and sidewalks over 3 tracks of Conrail in downtown Hershey. The railroad is the former Lebanon Branch of the Reading RR, established in the 1850s to connect Reading and Harrisburg. The line has been determined eligible by PHMC (DOE 9/14/93). To the north is the Hershey amusement park, parking lots, and observation tower. At the southeast quadrant is a parking lot and the drive-thru for a bank. At the southwest quadrant is the rear of the ca. 1920 Proser department store. The setting does not have the cohesiveness or integrity of a historic district.
The single span, 72'-long, partially encased, steel thru girder with floorbeams bridge is supported on concrete abutments with wingwalls. It has cantilevered concrete sidewalks with concrete parapets. Thru girder bridges are one of the state's most common bridge types in widespread use since the mid 19th century. Encasement was used to protect the steel from the elements as well as train blasts, and it negated the need to periodically paint the steel. This example has no unusual or noteworthy features. It is not located in a potential historic district. Built in 1925 as a replacement bridge by the Reading RR in response to the needs of automobile and truck traffic, it does not have a significant historic association with the development of the PHMC-determined eligible Lebanon Valley Branch line.
