Palm Garden Bridge
Posted February 5, 2022, by George Oakley (georgeoakley49 [at] yahoo [dot] com)

The Port Authority closed this 1,052-foot bridge Friday after engineers found a portion of the bridge shifted. The cause of the shift hasn't been determined and the authority has closed the bridge-used only by Port Authority buses and light rail vehicles-indefinitely.The authority closed the bridge, known as the Saw Mill Run Boulevard or Palm Garden Bridge, about 9 a.m., Friday after an employee reported that a joint on the bridge deck looked like it had expanded.Engineers and a bridge consultant dispatched to the scene examined the bridge for signs of distress and movement and determined the bridge was "stable" but shouldn't be used until repairs are made. The agency said it's working with third party contractors to develop a timetable for repairs. At it's last inspection in October 2020 it was rated in satisfactory condition, according to the Port Authority. The authority said repair work will involve removing a portion of the concrete bridge deck to get to the bridge's superstructure, removing the existing anchor bolts and resetting the position of the bridge, repairing and/or replacing the rail joint, and replacing the portion of the concrete deck that was removed. Before the work can begin, crews will have to remove overhead power lines and replace them when the project is finished.Detours will be in effect while the construction is being performed on this bridge.
