Description

This bridge is the southern entrance to the United States Marine Corps Camp Lejeune. Although technically on a public highway (NC 172), entry into Camp Lejeune is required in order to cross the bridge, as the security checkpoint & entrance fee collection booth is located immediately north of the bridge with no legal turnaround prior. NC 172 is unusual in that the route designation is continuous through the military base but is not open to the public. Usually, when a military base, National Park Service land, or other private development is located along the course of a state route, the state designation is divided into two segments on either side of whatever is in between. This is not the case here.
