Description

The Hobo Camp Railroad consisted of two wooden trestle bridges that served the railroad going through Fairmont. One line used to be the Milwaukee Railroad which came in from the west (Worthington and Jackson) and continued eastward to Blue Earth and Albert Lea respectively. The other was the Chicago and Northwestern Line which came down from Brookings and Walnut Grove and then continued onto Winnebago and Mankato. The westbound bridge has been decommissioned for some time, while the eastbound line is still being operated by UP and CP Railroad and serves traffic regularily. The name Hobo Camp came from a nearby camp which had existed from the 1920s to the 1950s and was the site of hobos, tramps, squatters, homeless and those who were looking for work wherever possible. These people would stop at the site of the bridges and camp out until the time came for them to catch the train and move to where the jobs were located. For many, the people of the City of Fairmont provided them with a job so that they could make ends meet and start a new life. The site was an excellent place for fishing and drinking water, among some of the things that it was useful for. A memorial has been placed at the site between the bridges commemorating the site where the unfortunate ones met. One can access the area via walkway from the nearby Sylvania Park
