Lowry Avenue Bridge (2012)

Oblique view from the east

This day was rather overcast, making these shots somewhat gray and boring.

I would not normally add a new bridge to this website, but I think that this one is monumental enough that it rates a space in the Hennepin County, MN listings. It has just opened on 27 October 2012, and as such, has no NBI information to post. This bridge is a basket-handle arch, a design that was chosen by the public and which beat out other designs, including a cable-stayed design, a tall arch, and a conventional beam/stringer bridge. Even though it is new, it's an attractive alternative to an ugly cable-stayed bridge or an even uglier stringer bridge. The people of Minneapolis knew that they were losing an iconic structure, and they wanted something that would at least somewhat rival it in recognizability. This bridge was opened to traffic on Sunday, October 27, 2012. The website below has more information:

I went past the bridge tonight. It was lit up with beautiful blue lights & was a nice addition to the riverfront!
