Description
One of two tunnels carrying the East Boston Expressway under Boston Harbor between downtown Boston on the MA mainland and Logan International Airport, located on a peninsula jutting out into Massachusetts Bay. The Callahan Tunnel carries two lanes of eastbound/outbound traffic, while the parallel Sumner Tunnel carries two lanes of westbound/inbound traffic. Prior to the construction of the Callahan Tunnel, the Sumner Tunnel carried one lane of traffic in each direction.
The Callahan, Sumner, and Ted Williams Tunnels, as well as the Tobin Memorial Bridge and the Massachusetts Turnpike are operated under the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Turnpike & Bridge Authority (MTBA), which, although no longer its own independent agency (it is now a component of MassDOT), is still considered to be a separate entity from MassDOT overall.
