Quick Facts

Written by James Norwood

This bridge was derelict when Logansport Memorial Hospital approached the City of Logansport about turning a mile of this abandoned rail line into a trail. So in the late 90's preliminary work was underway to turn this long forgotten relic into a walking trail that was to become known as the Eel River Bluff Trail. At 1.3 miles, it is enjoyed by locals often and has won national awards. This bridge was pretty much totally replaced and is near the Western end. Just West of the trailhead, the rail and ties are still there, part of the Logansport and Eel River Shortline Incorporated, but has not seen a wheel turn on most of it in many years(except storage and Cole Hardwood). The railroad was recently sold to either Railamerica or US Rail, not sure which one got it at this time. This bridge is easily seen across the Eel River from Logansport's Riverside Park.

A little late, but no I havenít walked it. Iíve been across the new pedestrian bridge, but not down the trail. I Need to get back there and look around as I want to check out the 10th St. Dam before they rip it out.

Have you ever checked on the other 2 bridges on the River Bluff trail. The bridge on the east end of the trail is still mostly intact with original material. This area was our old stomping ground as a kid. We lived on the south side of the river on the 1800 block of High street, and I remember the trains still running thru the now trail.
