Vermilion River Bridge

This structure is a 3 span deck truss design. It is located at the east end of Oglesby, La Salle County, Illinois. The official name of the road is Ed Hand Highway and it connects Oglesby to Illinois Rt 71 which is north of the river. Mr Hand was a long time city clerk in Oglesby and the road was named in honor of him after his death in 1959. The road was built between 1938 and 1942 and included another bridge over the CB&Q railroad just south of the river bridge. The road was opened in October 1941 and was gravel until it was paved in 1952. By the time they rebuilt the river bridge in the 1980's the railroad had been abandoned. The railroad bridge was removed and material from a nearby coal slag pile was used to fill in the gap. There are piers and an abutment from the old mine bridge still visible about 100' downstream of the highway bridge.
