My parents told me that the "C" was painted by the Columbia University crew team. An internet search revealed that this may have happened around 1949 when the Intercollegiate Rowing Association moved their regatta from Poughkeepsie to Marietta.

What did the letter "C" designate on the side of the bridge pier?

Many fond memories crossing the bridge whether in a car or the old street car.

The day this bridge hit the Ohio River a massive amount of history and historic bridge value died with it.
