Historic significance:

Written by Robert Thompson

The Winneconne Bascule bridge crosses a narrow strait between Lake Poygan and Big Lake Butte des Morts. During the 1800's, tugboats pulled rafts of freshly cut logs from northern Wisconsin through these lakes to the mills of the Fox River Valley. Sternwheel steamboats hauled passengers and general merchandise to towns and villages along the waterway. This bridge still sees commercial traffic - small towboats and construction barges of a local marine construction company, and a passenger excursion vessel based nearby.
