Madison is both the state capital of Wisconsin and the home of the University of Wisconsin. The city is committed to bicycle ridership, with special bike lanes on thoroufares and a series of state trails on former railroad right-of-ways. The Madison trails connect to other state trails, one connecting Madison to the Hank Aaron State Trail in Milwaukee. In the not-too-distant future, you will be able to bike from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River and cross this bridge in the process.

Oblique View West Side

The Yahara River is a tributary of the Rock River that flows from a source in the north part of Dane County. It feeds the five lakes in the chain that surround Madison. The most famous of the lakes are Menona and Mendota, that are separated by the isthmus that holds the City of Madison. Lake Monona is the site of the plane crash that killed Otis Redding on December 10, 1967. Several vehicle, bicycle/pedestrian and railway bridges cross the Yahara River between Monona and Mendota.
