Hylebos Bridge

Description
This double leaf bascule bridge was built at a cost of $380,000, replacing a 1925 single leaf Strauss that only cost $80,000. From the beginning the single leaf Strauss was the subject of a fight between the War Department and the city over use of the Hylebos Waterway. Citizens on the other side, Browns and Dash Point were grateful that the city finally put in a bridge to connect them. The War Department desired a wider and deeper waterway to speed up commerce and industry. The War Department won in a lengthy legal battle that cost the city dearly and over protests of angry citizens. So the previous bridge was scrapped in favour of the current bridge which currently sits in upright position until repairs can be made. The approaches were done by Paine & Gallucci Inc. while General Construction Co. did the main span.Facts
