DM&E Foster Viaduct #2: Canadian Pacific on the Foster, IA trestles 10/31/12
West of Blakesburg, Iowa on the DM&E's Laredo Subdivision, there are three trestles spanning the rolling hills of southeastern Monroe County. Two of the trestles are located at a point known as "Foster" a few miles out of Moravia. I've shot many DM&E freights here before but never at this angle. This mixed freight I'd chased out of Ottumwa earlier that afternoon, and is powered by a pair of CP AC4400CW's. Enjoy!

UP Skunk River Bridge: Unpatched Southern Pacific SP 187 on UP manifest crossing Skunk River, Ames, Iowa
Friday, December 7, 2012, 9:51 AM. This train is the prize of the day. Unpatched Southern Pacific locomotive SP 187 is right behind lead engine UP 7137 on this eastbound Union Pacific mixed freight crossing the bridge over the Skunk River. The video opens with the camera zoomed in on the blank space where the bridge manufacturer's plate has apparently been stolen. There's a similar spot on the north side of the bridge. A little later, that's Rick in the lower left corner shooting the train with my old camera (with no sound). I'll upload that video a little later.

UP 500th Avenue Overpass: Bridge Night, part 1: manufacturer's plaque & patched Southern Pacific at R-38 Underpass
Monday, September 17, 2012, 7:04 PM. I took two videos tonight, and they both show trains crossing rural bridges, so I decided to call tonight "Bridge Night." A bridge I see all the time and have uploaded at least two videos of with trains on it is the Story County R-38 underpass, yet I'd never thought to look for the manufacturer's plaque. The other bridge plaques I've recorded have all been by the American Bridge Company or the related Lassig Iron Works. This one is "fabricated by Des Moines Steel Co.". Here it is crossed by a Union Pacific mixed freight led by UP 4452, UP 4284, and patched Southern Pacific UP 6331 (formerly SP 281). I'm guessing this is actually a Canadian National train from the CN cars, as well as BC Rail and Alberta cars.

Ebey Slough Bridge: Remembering the Ebey Slough Swing Bridge
The Ebey Slough Bridge served Snohomish County, Washington, for 85 years before being replaced in 2012. It was a unique swing bridge design and was one of only four swing bridges left under WSDOT care. Down from 16 in 1944, there are only three swing bridges left at WSDOT now, and the Ebey Slough Bridge was a great example of a bridge type that may not be around on state highways much longer.

Paulsboro Railroad Bridge: Conrail Paulsboro Bridge
At the north end of Paulsboro, NJ the former PRSL line to Deepwater/Carney's Point crosses over the Mantua Creek on an "A-Frame" movable bridge. These bridges were once common in South Jersey at locations where only a short span was needed to cross a navigable waterway. The bridge span is suspended on one end from the A Frame and pivots on the other, being moved to either position by a cable pulled by a winch. Once the span is in the closed position, the bridge tender locks the span with locking bars, clears the lever operated "smashboard" semaphore signals, and cranks the bridge down onto the north abutment. After the train passes, the sequence is reversed to open the bridge. At the time of the video, the only concession to modernity was an electric motor to operate the winch instead of the old "ship's wheel" cranks which were still available for manual use in case of power failure. You can see them turning on the video as the bridge moves. I was fortunate to catch this sequence as the bridge has been converted to automatic operation and the bridge tender's position and cabin eliminated. Train crews activate the bridge to close by pushing a sequence of tones on their radio.
