Hampton Road Bridge

This bridge was not nearly so high above grade originally. The original 4-lane configuration was at ground level which was at the same level as the bottom of the arch. The current roadway was sunk an additional 6 feet more or less enabling the widening of the road. At the old surface level, the arch would have been too low to allow travel at height for more than about six lanes perhaps just the original four.
