Description
In August of 1920, the state let a contract for improvements to what was then State Route 7 between the Davidson County line (La Vergne) and Murfreesboro, a distance of 16.3 miles. This route was an important link in Middle Tennessee, serving as a common alignment for both the Dixie Highway and the Memphis-to-Bristol Highway. In 1923, about the time the project was completed, the state re-numbered its state route system and this road became State Route 1. The contract originally included road and bridge work, but due to new federal requirements, the state amended the contract to build overpasses to replace two at-grade crossings with the (then) N. C. & St. L. Railway: this bridge in La Vergne and a bridge near Murfreesboro (TN 750A0380003). The road work and bridges cost about $500,000 while the two overpasses cost $74,000. The beginning date for the main contract was 20 August 1920, and while the road work was completed by 25 November 1921, the overpasses were not completed until 06 August 1923.
