Various website improvements

As we recover from the Independence Day weekend, I've added these website features:

  • Draft mode while adding bridges: When creating a new bridge, you have the option of leaving the page as a draft so that it won't be visible to the public or appear on the Updates list. You can continue to make edits to the page, and then publish it when you are ready.

  • "My Stuff" page: Since draft bridges won't appear on the site, I've added an admin page that shows the bridges that you've created, even if they are still in draft mode. If you lose track of a bridge, you can find it here and publish it. Click the "My Stuff" link in the black bar at the top of every page (this was formerly labeled "My Photos") and then click "My Bridges".

  • Improvements to the Updates list: When adding or editing a bridge, you have the option of specifying what note should appear on the main Updates page. You can also skip adding an update by leaving the "Update log" box blank.

  • Quadrangle maps: Both bridgehunter.com and landmarkhunter.com now provide easier access to USGS quadrangle maps, which can be quite helpful for finding obscure locations. Most bridge and landmark pages now link to a page showing information about the relevant quadrangle map. From there, you can download the PDFs from the USGS website, jump to quadrangles at different scales, or browse adjoining quads. On landmarkhunter.com, you can also see the quads that cover a particular county: first go to the county's main page and then click "Quadrangles."

As always, these changes may have introduced weird bugs. Please let me know if something is out of whack.

Wythe county VA - Alison swinging bridge is closed

this bridge http://bridgehunter.com/va/wythe/bh63559/

Steps are removed and needs tread repairs and cable tightening needs attention! Love to see it restored or worked on. The tread hits the water at high water levels.

I email VDOT -awaiting response! Nice bridge and great location.

Brandon, Google updated its code for their Maps/Streetview, so that's why there are a lot of broken Streetviews.

Funny... I need to download Quadrangles for a bridge and usually when I do, I have gone thru the USGS page, but just today I had a specific need, and the new feature worked great and saved me a ton of time dealing with the cumbersome USGS browser.

Various website improvements - bug report
Posted July 7, 2014, by Fmiser (fmiser [at] gmail [dot] com)

Hmm. I included the HTML tag for where the problem is. But it was stripped in the post. So I'll try again - without angle braces.

On the home (root) page, on the right just under the map (td id="pagesidebar") is navigation that still point to "my photos". I expect that should now be "my stuff"

Nice!

I like the "bridges" section in "My Stuff". I immediately spotted a bridge I intended to upload photos for - but haven't! Oops.

I did spot an inconsistency. On the home (root) page, on the right just under the map () is a navigation that still point to "my photos". I expect that should now be "my stuff"

I agree. The site is great and the changes will make making it better easier. The Draft mode should result in a better listing when the entry is ready.

The easier access to the USGS maps should help with some iffy locations.

These are good changes that make a great website even better.

"Draft" mode will be particularly well-received for those of us who think of something else to add to a bridge after posting it, or notice a mistake and wish to correct it before other "pontists" see it.

I plan to include USGS maps, current or historical, in the future.

Thanks, Jim--Good job!
