Historic Bridge Conference 2011
Friday, July 22, 2011
Bridgehunter.com,
Bridgemapper.com, and
The Bridgehunter's Chronicles are partnering to sponsor this year's Historic Bridge Conference. The
2009 and 2010 conferences explored the bridges of Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania, while this year's event will feature bridges in St. Louis and Missouri.
St. Louis has a long history of bridge building, starting with the Eads Bridge over the Mississippi River, a National Historic Landmark. In modern times, St. Louis has been an unsung leader in historic bridge preservation, rehabilitating three major bridges (Eads, McKinley, and Old Chain of Rocks).
However, many other bridges are threatened with demolition or replacement. The Meramec River Bridge on Historic Route 66 has been closed to traffic and is in danger of demolition. In the southwest corner of Missouri, the Riverside Bridge at Ozark, Missouri, has also been threatened. The Historic Bridge Conference includes events at both of these endangered bridges.

Historic Bridge Conference 2011

I didn't get to attend the bridge hunting on Friday but I was able to attend the dinner conference. I'm glad I did. We had a brief meeting in the Route 66 State Park Visitors Center on Saturday morning. That was very informative about various agencies that are working together to try to save the Route 66 bridge. I did get to take some new photos of the Route 66 bridge and some of the damage. I've added my images to the page for the bridge.
If you ever get the chance to attend a bridge conference in the future, don't hesitate to attend. It's well worth the time. I wish I could have spent the entire weekend with the group this year.
I met a lot of wonderful people that were very inspirational! Thank you for your knowledge, caring, effort in saving bridges, and your time for attending this year's event!

The conference starts tomorrow! We've got room for more people at the dinner Friday in St. Louis and the fundraiser Saturday at Ozark, so if you're in the area, come on down.
