Welcome, participants from "Outwit the West"
Saturday, October 16, 2010
I've noticed a surge in traffic during the last week as contestants in the Marlboro "Outwit the West" contest have been searching for the answers to Question #9. The question requires matching
four photos of bridges with the name of the river that they cross.
The quiz is rather sneaky. Here are some hints:
Photo A. Based on the number of hits I've received from people Googling for the Rob Roy Bridge over the Arkansas River, it appears many people are going to get this one wrong. It's not Rob Roy.
Photo B. This is a ferry, not a bridge. Ha!
Photo C. The Alabama state flag is obviously just a distraction. Look closely at the tower on the left. Other than the Golden Gate Bridge, what is the most famous suspension bridge in the West? (Although I would argue the bridge's "fame" is overrated.)
Photo D. Ignore the fish-eye lens effect and consider how grand this canyon looks.

Picture A took me -0.47 sec to figure out. Love that bridge!!! Pretty awesome to see it in a "national" contest. Guess it's getting famous, now that it's going to be around awhile longer n' all... :)

Wendi: Yes, those are the correct answers.
The bridges are:
A. Boonville Railroad Bridge over the Missouri River (also known as the Katy Bridge)
B. Keller Ferry over the Columbia River (or more specifically, the approach to the ferry)
C. Royal Gorge Bridge over the Arkansas River (or as I like to call it, the Royal Gouge Bridge)
D. Navajo Bridge over the Colorado River

LOL, your comments are almost as cryptic as Marlboro's clues. But now that that week's list is done:
A. Yes, flat roofs on the span houses of the Rob Roy do not make a correct answer! Yet the MKT bridge in Boonville will "peak" one's interest in a proper solution.

B. Here you are sort of right: that isn't a bridge BUT it's not a ferry either! It is a ferry 'ramp'! (unless they learned how to put street lights poles on ferries) The secret to this one was the Green Circles on the stop bars. Despite being blurred by Marlboro these are clearly Washington State Department of Transportation logos ... as anybody from the "Evergreen State" can tell you. The answer is obviously the Columbia River.

C. The Alabama flag was the definative clue here ... the rest of the picture was worthless unless one lives next door to the Royal Gorge bridge. I just happened to see a picture on Google showing a tourist standing next to a state flag on a bridge. As far as it being famous: never heard of it before! :)

D. That one was the no-brainer in the bunch. It couldn't be anything other than the Navajo Bridge over the Colorado.

Thank-you for your website. I have learned some interesting facts. Now that all answers have been locked in and points distributed, can you let us know the actual answers. Most of us have A. Missouri River; B. Columbia River; C. Arkansas River and D. Colorado River. Are we correct?
