About Me

Email: flensburg [dot] bridgehunter [dot] av [at] googlemail [dot] com

I became fascinated with bridges when I was five years old, mainly because where I grew up, Jackson County, MN, we had plenty of metal truss bridges to go around. This includes the Petersburg Road Bridge which was located in the south end of town just north of where my grandma used to live. I became fascinated with the different designs and the history of each structure that I started photographing the structures at a young age, 13 to be exact. In addition to that, I also wrote some commentaries on the bridges and conducted some presentations on them, the former of which I still do for this website, as well as Nathan Holth's website.

Since a lot of these bridges are disappearing, I have been active in photographing them as long as they are still standing. Furthermore, I have an online column that is devoted to this topic through the Bridgehunter's Chronicles, which started in 2010 and has become popular ever since. I also have some book projects in the making both big and small dealing with these structures in certain regions, including Iowa (where I have been really active in that area). Originally from Minnesota, I've ben residing in Germany since 1999, where I'm an English lecturer/trainer and have a wife and 6-year old daughter, who might have the same interest as I do in the future, the way we've been travelling around since she came around. ;-)

All I know is that in the latest Street View dated December 2018, the bridge is still standing. Apparently, Annonymous is either mistaking this bridge with another one unless there's photographic evidence, or the person is just pissing us off. In either case, her claim is fake news unless we have real evidence.

Kern Bridge (Minnesota)

Faced with an uncertain future, this bridgehunter from Minnesota, currently living in Germany, has launched a campaign to find ways to relocate and restore the Kern Bowstring Arch Bridge, the longest bridge of its kind in the US and second longest in the world. Summary of Flood/ Ice-related Bridge Disasters
Posted March 18, 2019

In connection with the latest flood update, here is a tally of all the historic bridges in the Midwest US that have fallen victim to flooding and/or ice jams. As you can see in many bridges, not even the most modern of structures had a chance, even counting the one near Spencer Dam in Nebraska. At least seven bridges gone are listed here: https://bridgehunterschronicles.wordpress.com/2019/03/18/apo...

More casualities will come and with that an update. Stay tuned....

Nathan, can you scan and send me a copy in PDF Format? I cannot access anything from Europe because of privacy guidelines. I'm really interested in seeing what the bridge looks like. Thanks for your help! :-)

This Bridge partially collapsed on 24 February when the Roof fell in under the pressure of the snowpack. This is not a surprise given the fact that Minnesota has already set an all-time record for the snowiest February ever. The Bridge will be rebuilt pending on how extensive the damage is. A summary is provided below:
