About Me

Email: flensburg [dot] bridgehunter [dot] av [at] googlemail [dot] com

I became fascinated with bridges when I was five years old, mainly because where I grew up, Jackson County, MN, we had plenty of metal truss bridges to go around. This includes the Petersburg Road Bridge which was located in the south end of town just north of where my grandma used to live. I became fascinated with the different designs and the history of each structure that I started photographing the structures at a young age, 13 to be exact. In addition to that, I also wrote some commentaries on the bridges and conducted some presentations on them, the former of which I still do for this website, as well as Nathan Holth's website.

Since a lot of these bridges are disappearing, I have been active in photographing them as long as they are still standing. Furthermore, I have an online column that is devoted to this topic through the Bridgehunter's Chronicles, which started in 2010 and has become popular ever since. I also have some book projects in the making both big and small dealing with these structures in certain regions, including Iowa (where I have been really active in that area). Originally from Minnesota, I've ben residing in Germany since 1999, where I'm an English lecturer/trainer and have a wife and 6-year old daughter, who might have the same interest as I do in the future, the way we've been travelling around since she came around. ;-)

Lo and behold, here are the official results of this year's Ammann Awards. Records broken and the highest participation rate on record to date. Congrats to the top six finishers in each of the categories. Also to Nels Raynor of BACH Steel for winning Lifetime Legacy. An interview with him to follow. Some of the winners are about to receive press releases for the newspapers. While the Author's Choice Awards will be posted soon, all I can say is congrats to all the winners and many thanks to those who contributed and supported this year's awards. Here are the details:

Don't forget: You have until January 7th at 11:59pm Chicago time to vote for your favorite bridge in this year's Ammann Awards. Unlike the awards in the past, this voting process has seen the highest number of votes on record. Furthermore in all of the competition, we have seen at least six lead changes. Just because one candidate is in the lead doesn't mean it will stay that way. In other words, between now and then, your bridge and/or pontist has a chance to win. So go out there and vote. The information on the candidate with a link to the ballot can be found here. https://flensburgerfiles.wordpress.com/2017/12/19/2017-amman...

A direct link to the ballot is found here:
