I thought there was a corporate sponsorship behind it. I'll check with my wife and see if any of her co-workers who are local to the area can tell her anything. One of the guys used to fish and swim off of it as a kid, and he's one of those guys who knows everyone and everything about the area.
Yes, it's gone. If you select the satellite view and zoom in you can see the new bridge and the old bridge within a view of each other. The birds eye pics are still of the old bridge.
Ruth, these bridges were all painted in the red, white and blue scheme back in the 70's when the whole country was Bicentennial happy. I think it's just a tradition at this point more than anything.
