Design: Schylkill Expressway
Posted August 16, 2010
There are 11 bridges with the design Schuylkill Expressway, most or all of which I added to BH. This is not a design, so somewhere I am adding something where it does not belong. Any ideas? Can it be fixed?

Many famous bridges owned by bi-state authorities are shown in Bridge Hunter as state-owned bridges, but that is not really the case. New Jersey does not own the Betsy Ross Bridge, or the George Washington Bridge, bi-state toll authorities do. Can the ownership choices be expanded to show the true situation?
The Delaware River Port Authority of Pennsylvania and New Jersey owns the Walt Whitman Bridge, the Betsy Ross Bridge, and other bridges. The DRPA is a Bi-state Authority and is a Congressionally-approved interstate compact entity.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is the same kind of entity, a bi-state, Congressionally-approved interstate compact entity.

The Benjamin Franklin Bridge and the Delaware River Bridge are the same bridge. How can they be combined into a single entry?

The FCC has a converter for latitude and longitude, either to or from decimal. This bridge is at 39.611667, -74.588889 by their conversion. Be careful to use a minus sign for West longitude, or the location is in China.

There are two Burlington-Bristol Bridge entries, slightly different, but they should be researched and combined.

This bridge is at N 39 36' 42" W 74 35' 20" but I do not know how to convert that to decimal latitude and longitude.
Chestnut Street Bridge
Posted August 10, 2010
Today I imported the Chestnut Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River from the NBI and uploaded 5 photos. Having seen the bridge in person, I have doubts about the dates for this bridge supplied by the NBI. Please take a look and let me know what you think.
Quick Start Guide, Adding a bridge
Posted August 10, 2010
Right now, the Quick Start Guide for adding a bridge says,
If you can't find a particular bridge, you can create a new page for it from scratch. First, read the guidelines below to make sure the bridge is worthy of posting.
What follows is not specific enough, at least for me, so here is my version. I have uploaded some screen capture images for clarity.
Then, click on “Add new bridge” and use the pull-down menus to the state and county where the bridge is located. The “Add bridge” form that follows allows you to enter the bridge from scratch. If you click on the county name, you will see a choice of “Add bridge here” or “Import from NBI.” Clicking on “Import from NBI” allows you to import from NBI 2009, NBI 2000, or NBI 1992. Clicking on any of the NBI choices produces a list of bridges in the county, and sometimes a long list. Using your browser’s Find may make it easier to find the specific bridge. Be careful of abbreviations, and ramps are usually not the bridge you want.

This location does not have a stone arch bridge, which should be apparent from Bing aerial or bird's eye pictures.
Navy Yard Lift Bridge
Posted July 29, 2010
Nathan Holth:
The Navy Yard Lift Bridge is up here on BH, but I need more information to put it on Wikipedia. Do you know when it was built? How did you know the name? I need sources for such things. Thanks for that coordinates tool, I used it to get a good fix on this bridge.
Perhaps I can learn something from the Bedwell Co., though.
Philadelphia Navy Yard lift bridge
Posted July 28, 2010
This old lift bridge is located in the former Philadelphia Navy Yard, between the Schuylkill River and the basin still used to moor mothballed naval vessels.
Bing Maps says it is on Basin Bridge Road. Google maps says it is on 8th St W.
It is near the Girard Point Bridge, which is at 39° 53′ 33″ N, 75° 11′ 49.2″ W, 39.8925, -75.197.
I have the following links for history of the bridge:
http://www.bedwell.net/liftbridge.html About 2005 renovations
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical-lift_bridge - Philadelphia Navy Yard
http://www.navyyard.org/uploads/files/newsletters/Newsletter... Brief mention of the bridge
I am attaching two photos of the bridge. Questions:
1) Does anyone have any history or other information on this bridge?
2) What mapping tool will allow me to pinpoint the coordinates?
3)At what point is it appropriate to add this bridge to BH?
Any help would be appreciated.
