Lake Cheston Pedestrian Bridge (Sewanee, TN)

I need some input on this bridge. Is it historic? Notable? A redneck Bridge? It is riveted and made with Lackawanna Steel.

"The Lauderdale County Commission has voted to accept a contract to demolish the Ghost Bridge. The vote was taken at their meeting this morning." -per Facebook page

This bridge has been closed for 16 years. It has been a "liability" for the county the entire time, yet all of a sudden they're in a rush to demolish it. It was announced in December that they were accepting bids for demolition. A large movement to save the bridge began, and they gave it a "stay of execution." Less than a month later, they have already accepted a contract for demolition.

Goodbye "Ghost Bridge"

You will be missed. :(

Coldwater Bridge is AL 8. The article says Al 1-7 are gone.

Here's AL #2. Built the same year.

I haven't been able to find anything out about this. I just noticed the piers on the satellite view one day and went to check it out.

This video focuses on the positive side of the suicide problem that plagues this bridge. It's called "Guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge," and tells the story of a patrolman who has saved many lives here.

A Facebook page was started for this bridge yesterday. It already had 640 likes. Hopefully we can save this bridge.

Unless they block off this road well before the bridge, this area will still be very accommodating to people who want to "party", dump trash, or whatever else they want to do. It is at a dead end at the bottom of a hill, around a curve, with plenty of room to park. This is the oldest through truss bridge in Lauderdale county. It is one of the main reasons I began bridge hunting. It started my fascination with historic bridges. Florence has been good about preserving historical structures. Maybe they'll relocate this bridge to a park. They brought life back to this bridge not too long ago: http://bridgehunter.com/al/lauderdale/old-railroad/

Unfortunately this 100 year old bridge in my home town may be doomed.

This article states, "a barricade was welded to the top of the framing to keep big trucks and tall machinery from crossing."

However, it doesn't mention the truck falling through the deck in 1988.

That looks like it could be it. I can't imagine them paying to repair a roughly 80yr old bridge with that kind of damage when a 9yr old bridge is right down the road.
