Description
The Lehigh County tourist pamphlet, Covered Bridges in the Lehigh Valley, lists the bridges name as Kreidersville Covered Bridge with alternate names of Hummel's Covered Bridge and Koch's Covered Bridge and there is a plaque on the portal indicating the bridges name as "Kreidersville Covered Bridge." The only remaining covered bridge in Northampton County, Pennsylvania and is among the oldest remaining covered spans in the state. Slated for demolition to make way for a new concrete and steel bridge, in 1959, local citizens rallied to save it and after restoration by the state, it was taken over by the county. Today it is owned and maintained in a park setting by Allen Township. The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments set on concrete and has stone and mortar wing walls capped with concrete. It does have steel reinforcement. It has barn red ship lapped boarding covering its sides and portals. The portals are trimmed in white. The deck consists of lengthwise planking and since it has no openings under the eves it is quite dark on the interior. Closed to motor traffic the roadway leading into the bridge from the south side, formerly made of older asphalt, has been replaced with cobblestone pavers laid in a decorative pattern. Also known as the Kreidersville Covered Bridge, the Hummel's Covered Bridge and the Koch's Covered Bridge . It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 1, 1980.
