MAZE - The Dimmsville Bridge Preservation project cleared its first hurtle during a recent Greenwood Township meeting.

The bridge, which is in danger of collapsing, was built in 1902 and is 100 feet long and 15 feet wide, spanning Cocolamus Creek.

Stephanie Bates, who is leading the charge to restore the bridge said the township supervisors agreed to accept ownership of the bridge, setting the stage for the Fred Ferguson Estate of Greenwood Township, the supposed current owner, to deed the bridge to the township.

However, Bates along with other members of the preservation project team are still researching the history of the bridge to make sure the deed transfer is accurate between the entities involved.

Greenwood Township Supervisor Gary Fronk said everyone is trying to work out the specifics right now.

"We are in the growing pains right now, there is a lot of paperwork to do," he said.

Bates said a township or municipality has access to federal and state grants which is why the transfer is so important in moving forward with the project.
