Mohrsville Bridge

I read an article on Mohrsville last Tuesday in the local paper where i live in Reading and it was mentioned in the article that originally a covered bridge with a toll charged for crossing was here where the present bridge is.There was no mention of a build date on the bridge but it was swept away by a flood on Sept. 2,1850.There is also no mention of what kind of bridge replaced this covered bridge.

As per an article in the reading eagle printed on 2-22-16 the new concrete bridge is in and final work is being finished. The old bridge is being demolished as reported in this article.I think for $3.4 million which this new bridge cost couldn't they have put in a steel truss bridge?

PennDOT Announces Start of Mohrsville Bridge Replacement Project in Centre and Perry townships, Berks County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today work will begin Monday, Feb. 10 to replace the structurally deficient Mohrsville Bridge (Main Street) over the Schuylkill River in Centre and Perry townships, Berks County.

The project includes building a new four-span spread box beam bridge adjacent to the existing four-span steel I-beam bridge.

The project also includes the realignment of Main Street, new roadway approaches, new drainage, demolition of existing residences and demolition of the existing bridge after construction of the new structure.

During construction, there will be no long term traffic impacts as traffic will be maintained on the existing Mohrsville Bridge. However, there may be short-term lane restrictions for demolition and roadway work. Updates will be provided when available.

The project is expected to be complete in June 2016. All schedules are weather dependent.

Kinsley Construction, Inc. of York, Pa. is the general contractor on the $3,415,873 project.

The Mohrsville Bridge was constructed in 1937. The Bridge is 254 feet long and 30 feet wide and is currently posted with a 15 ton weight restriction. The new Bridge will be 283 feet long and 28 feet wide and will have no restriction.

Main Street has an average daily traffic volume of 3,106 vehicles.
