Future prospects
The Coos Bay rail line closed in September 2007. The Port of Coos Bay purchased the line and after structure and tunnel work reopened the line to the North Spit area north of North Bend in 2011 as the Coos Bay Rail Link. The line south of the Coos Bay Bridge remains closed until bridge work can be completed.

Design
The Siuslaw River Railroad Bridge is a swing span bridge consisting of two 200-foot Pratt through truss approach spans and a 300-foot Warren truss swing span. There is a half mile long trestle approach to the south of the bridge across the South Inlet Marsh.
