Description

The Mendenhall Creek Bridge along with the Deer Creek Bridge, are the last two remaining original bridges along the Redwood Highway in Oregon. Though both bridges are no longer on the U.S. 199 alignment they still serve local traffic in the Illinois Valley. The bridges feature many of the standard details used during the era of State Bridge Engineer Conde B. McCullough, whom served the State of Oregon in that position from 1919 to 1936.

Though many other bridges built along the Redwood Highway in the 1920ís still exist only the Deer Creek and Mendenhall crossings have remained unaltered since their construction. All of the other bridges along the highway have either been widened with pre-cast slabs or have been replaced and all have lost their aesthetic charm.
