Before this bridge was constructed, the only vehicular path to Oklahoma from Fort Smith was either the Helen Gould Railroad Bridge, or the E street bridge across the Poteau, or a Ferry.

This bridge was originally located at Ft. Smith, Arkansas across the Poteau River. When this route flooded in the 1940's the branch line was abandoned and this bridge was moved to Marble City.
