Look closely at the high res pics Gene. The Lally is still there , you can see the circle on the top of the pier. I too have seen this before. I would assume that the boiler plate of the Lally was worn away due to rust and scour all the way to the concrete fill so it was encased as a form of on site repair.

What is this with one pier being a Lally Column, and one pier being square concrete?? Was this lost bridge widened at some point? This is not the only location for this arrangement I have seen.
