Mt. Washington Auto Road Bridge
Description
This small bridge at the approach to the Mount Washington Auto Road crosses the Peabody River. The bridge is a steel deck plate girder bridge but the structure can also be removed via special machines and/or by crane. It is not clear what purpose this design feature has, since the Peabody River would certainly never be navigable. It is possible that this is a flood control measure where the bridge can be removed (and the Auto Road closed) if there is major flooding in the area.
