Constructed over five months in 1936-1937, the Confederate Avenue bridge spanning Halls Ferry Road is the only extant bridge of its type in the state of Mississippi. The bridge was included in the portion of land transferred to the city of Vicksburg in 1963. Now lying outside the park boundary and outside of park jurisdiction, the bridge is in a precarious situation, facing possible alteration or replacement.

Our family tradition was "every time" while driving under the bridge you were to lick your finger and while touching the ceiling of the vehicle the driver would honk the horn then you would stick your finger out the window to dry while making a wish. I taught this to my kids as well.

While driving under the bridge, one MUST hold your feet up and make a wish, as the driver beeps the horn.Tradition for 50 years +
