According to the operators, who also run the Golden Eagle ferry a few miles downstream, there is no intention to return the Winfield ferry to normal operation. The location is used only when river conditions force suspension of activity at the Golden Eagle location and such conditions still allow safe operation at Winfield. That seems to happen a few times of year, usually for a day or two, during bad ice or high water.

The Winfield Ferry closes, then opens, then closes again, according to need.
It will be in operation tomorrow morning at 5:00 AM for rush hour traffic. According to the ferry operators, the river is high and approaching crest. One of the ferries from Golden Eagle has been moved to Winfield. If the river begins to fall, the ferry will be moved from Winfield, back to Golden Eagle, tomorrow night.
There isn't much information on the website, so I inquired to the ferry company about this. I just heard from an official and she tells me that the Winfield Ferry is only closed temporarily. The company also operates the Golden Eagle ferry, where there is more traffic. She reports that rush hour traffic is backed up at the Golden Eagle ferry, so they closed the Winfield Ferry in order to operate two ferries at the Golden Eagle location at peak times.
To quote, she said, "We have long lines of commuters at Golden Eagle but not at Winfield so we decided to operate 2 ferries at Golden Eagle Monday thru Friday 5am-8am and 3pm-6pm and this has worked very well."
She further reports that the Winfield Ferry will begin to operate again when the Golden Eagle ferry closes because of ice or high water.
As of this writing, no one has documented the Golden Eagle Ferry on this site.
The Winfield ferry is permanently closed. See http://www.calhounferrycompany.com
