I also grew up in this area and crossed this bridge hundreds of times. It really was a nightmare of a crossing because of it being so narrow. Used to always see a mirror or two from a dumptruck or bus that swiped one another trying to cross. It always seemed a game of roulette when coming around either curve approaching the bridge. You never knew what to expect. Sorry to see it demolished because it really was a nice landmark. The arches under the bridge were somewhat unknown to most but were a wonderful design. Thanks again for the pics!

Yes, the old bridge was narrow indeed. I remember my grandfather taking me for a Sunday drive to see a relative of his, who had lived near the bridge, who also had a boat launching operation there titled "Zig's Landing". It may still be there on the remnant of the old Highway 30 approach leading to the old bridge (Pond Ford Road on "maps.live.com"). The last time I rode across that old bridge was when the concrete balustrades were in place, and I can see by additional pictures that the concrete ones were removed / replaced with steel guard rails.

I grew up in the St. Clair / Lonedell Missouri area and remember this bridge well. It's demise was unfortunate but needed. Like most old bridges it was quite narrow. There was a blind turn on both approaches and a gravel quarry nearby. People would be scared to cross and stop at the beginning of the bridge until the vehicle had made it past from the other direction. Occasionally a dump truck on route to pick up or drop off gravel would come around the turn and be unpleasantly surprised by a stopped car. A few times this resulted in a fatality which ultimately resulted in the replacement of the bridge. Although a little tight I personally had no problem navigating across the bridge, I just got good at hugging the guardrail without scraping it. Once I heard it was going to be demolished I went to take pictures. I didn't realize the beautiful arches under the deck driving across it every day! I found this site and saw a page for the old 30 bridge but no pics of how it used to look, so here they are and enjoy!!!
