lived on this road for over 20 years....bridge is not haunted, have spent entire nights sitting at the bridge in the dark. People who say that it is haunted are either full of crap, on drugs or just imagining things.

Went by here to try to catch this one before it was torn down. We were too late. It is so sad that beautiful old structure has been removed and replaced by an ugly concrete bridge.

My husband and I ... went with a friend tonight to take a few pictures check it out. We bought a cheapy cam, put the batteries in it, before we even got to the bridge, checked to see that it worked, which it did. My husband gets out of the car to take a few pictures with it, it wouldn't come on. He hands it back to me and starts using his cam from his phone, we noticed on the pictures he got that it had a blue mist. He heard something moving the woods, so we left. We checked again to see if our cam was going to work, and it still wouldn't come on. I started messing around thinking maybe it was something with the batteries, so I opened it, only to find our batteries were gone! None of us have no clue waht happen to those batteries, all we know is they were in there when we got out to use the cam. I been to this bridge a lot... and have got great pictures with orbs and stuff, this is the first time that something was taken from us. What ever was down there did not want us there at all. The night before it was kind of the same, my husband tried to take pictures with his phone and it shut off, my friend tried taking pictures with her phone which had a flash and all you saw was black. I am assuming something just was not in the mood to have their picture taken. We did get a few orbs.

Molly,

Could you give me a call. Nels has asked me to explore this bridge through Workin' Bridges. I would like to have a contact name at the county and see if we could come give an estimate and scope of work for the restoration to vehicular traffic on this bridge.

Thanks,

Julie Bowers

As I'm writing an article about the bridge for the Bridgehunter's Chronicles, may I use this pic as one of the photos to be added to the article? I would like to use it at the beginning of the article. Please let me know via e-mail if it's alright with you. Thanks! :-)

Nels,

That would be stellar if you could do something for the enoch's knob rd bridge!!! I consulted my folks who live near the bridge, getting a hold of the county would be a start, here's their website....

http://www.franklinmo.org/

BTW that renovated bridge looks great! So many truss bridges look so sad after many years of use and abuse. What you have done is a portal ( ha ha) into what they looked like when new, great work :-)

As the owner of a company that specializes in restoring these historic bridges for the last 15 years I can tell you that the hardess part of the restoration is finding an engineer to say yes it can be done. I have found those engineers!I have gone as far as buying some of these beautiful historic structures to restore and use elsewhere

I would love to be involved in some way to help save this bridge.I enclosed a picture of the last bridge we just completed ...

The Franklin County website had the concept plan up for a short while. I've attached the PDF. From the notes on the plan it does appear to at least be partially Federally funded.

And I certainly question the comment on why a new bridge would cost more than a million dollars--even the smallest crossings that require more than a concrete culvert that I have ever seen are well over a million dollars in cost, so I would be curious to see how anyone can keep the price tag under that building any new structure to current AASHTO standards--I think that the most feasible solution here is to rehabilitate the current bridge--no demolition costs; no expensive, nasty new bridge to throw up over; history and beauty are maintained; and a river crossing remains at this location. Oh, and did I mention that I'm a civil engineer and do this for a living?

Enochs Knob Road Bridge
Posted February 12, 2011, by Anthony Dillon (spansaver [at] hotmail [dot] com)

That's funny......we're rehabilitating them here in Indiana using federal funding......and they're still 1 lane bridges.

http://bridgehunter.com/in/carroll/wilsons/

http://bridgehunter.com/in/delaware/white-300s/

http://bridgehunter.com/in/hancock/hays/

......Just to name a few.

A rehabilitated, one-lane bridge sounds like all that is needed at this location.....with all due respect.

Enochs Knob Road Bridge
Posted February 12, 2011, by Kilroy

I respectfully disagree about saving this bridge. I am for saving bridges were it makes sense, but this isn't one.

To be rehabilitated and use federal dollars it's going to have to be upgraded to a 2-lane bridge, which would require a new bridge. With federal funds not available that leaves the county on the hook for the project and they have many more pressing needs - take the Bend Road bridge for example - it's a one lane bridge with a lot of traffic. To spend hundreds of thousands on a bridge for 10 or so cars a day just doesn't make sense. IMO they should demo the bridge and be done with that crossing because the detour isn't that long.

I question the comment that a new bridge would cost many millions of dollars. By my estimate (and I do this for a living), if you're spending more than $1 million on engineering, construction and construction administration then someone's making a ridiculous profit. Bridge demo would be on the order of $50k, especially with steel salvage prices what they are today.

Enochs Knob Road Bridge
Posted February 6, 2011, by Nathan Holth (form3 [at] historicbridges [dot] org)

From the few photos on this page, I see absolutely no reason why this bridge cannot be rehabbed. And because a new bridge must meet AASHTO guidelines (ie two lanes with shoulder wide on a one lane road, etc) a new bridge will be very costly. Further, with a bridge this long, most new bridges will be multi-span, because modern bridges are built of short-span materials like pre-stressed box beams. Piers will add cost to the new bridge.

Enochs Knob Road Bridge
Posted February 4, 2011, by Matthew Lohry

I would also fully disagree--stringers are amongst the easiest and cheapest members to replace on a bridge like this, because it can be done without compromising the structural integrity of it. All the stringers do is support the wood that makes up the deck, and that's it. The main trusses support the floor beams (as well as the entire structure as a whole), the floor beams support the stringers, and the stringers support the deck. It looks like the main trusses would be just fine with a good cleaning, sandblasting, and one or two new coats of paint. Replacing this bridge would surely cost in the many millions--just the demolition of this structure would be in the hundreds of thousands, and new bridges just are not cheap.

Enochs Knob Road Bridge
Posted February 4, 2011, by J.P.

I would disagree any historic span is worth saving, just the right people with deep enough wallets have to step forward.

Enochs Knob Road Bridge
Posted February 4, 2011, by Kilroy

The bridge is not worth saving. It may look fine from up top, but there are many holes in the stringers under the bridge deck which is why it is closed. A new bridge will cost much less than rehabilitating this one. Anyone taking over the bridge is looking at serious liability or cost for maintenance. Whether a bridge is needed there at all is another issue.

Actually, there is a possibility to collaborate with the contractors on purchasing the rights to the bridge as long as you assume responsibility for the bridge and the safety of those who use the bridge for recreational purposes. This was done with the Quaker Bridge in Pennsylvania as it is currently being converted into a park. For those interested, you may want to keep that in mind. For more information, please contact either Nathan Holth of the Historic Bridges.org website or Nathan Clark who is spearheading the Quaker Bridge project. Thanks and good luck.

You would have to take up your concerns about the project and the bridge with your elected County Commissioners. However, if they have already started construction which by the appearence of the sheepsfoot roller in your picture, they have, it is probably too late. Once the contract is let it is to late to change the plans. And yes, it is a mistake I have seen other Missouri folks make - assuming MODOT maintains every road. However, MODOT may have been involved in the project as they oversee federal bridge money used on many county bridge projects.

Enochs Knob Road Bridge
Posted January 20, 2011, by molly Hill (birdgurl97 [at] hotmail [dot] com)

Thanks for that clarification :-) My folks kept saying modot, which is why I said it too... Guess people use it as a blanket term for anything road maintenance related in missouri :-? If it is a county project am I wrong thinking there might be hope they won't demolish the old bridge???

Enochs Knob Road Bridge
Posted January 19, 2011, by Gerald Meyr (Tillerman61 [at] gmail [dot] com)

In the for what its worth columan, the Enochs Knob Bridge does not appear to be a MODOT project. This is a Franklin County road so it would be a Franklin County project under normal circumstances. MODOT could be providing some of the funding and some engineering oversight, but Franklin County should be responsible for the project.

Enochs Knob Road Bridge

Enoch's road construction update.... It's evident that the original enoch's knob bridge will be by-passed by a new bridge upstream. Wether modot will retain the old bridge or tear it down is still a mystery. All I know is the people who live along the road are against the whole thing. They are trying to petition against it, although the project is well underway. There's only 3 households along the one mile road that very much like where they live being remote and hard to get to. The project seems to be driven by the needs of the nearby quarry. This upsets the locals even more seeing their place of solitude will turn into a drag-strip for dump-trucks. There's confusion among the homeowners too as of why the bridge needs to be replaced, citing "It works just fine" but also apathy because it attracts illegal activities. I'm keeping in touch with my folks on the issue... I've attached some pictures showing where the new road and bridge will go, and a nice winter scene :-)

Chant demon dog all you want the only thing you are going to get is my rottweiler chasing you. I live on Enochs Knob Rd very close to the bridge I absolutely love watching people go to the bridge and try to "investigate". The bridge is absolutely not haunted many unfortunate accidents and a murder have happened there but I have spent many nights on the bridge partying in high school and i can assure you nothing "paranormal" has ever happened there. I went there tonight with my husband, and our close friends. We pulled up on the bridge and honked three times and waited to see if the bridge would start to shake, but nothing happend. We drove across then turned around and drove bake across and parked the car we all got out and walked onto the bridge. My friend started to talk to a man named Patrick. She took the beer that we bought from my husband and told patrick that she was placeing a un opend beer down on the floor of the bridge for him, then we herd what sounded like some one climbing up the side of the bridge. So we told Patrick that we will be back tomarrow to see if he drank the beer. We walked back to the car and left. Is this bridge haunted. YES it is. I took a photo of the front of that bridge on my phone, If you zoom in on my photo on my phone you will see a out line of a dog walking twards you. This is sapose to be the form that Patrick sometimes takes to play tricks on you.

Spirits scaring away demo/construction crews? it's possible. A very haunted house in Kansas city was slated to be demolished and turned into a parking lot. The college that owns it changed their minds and decided to renovate it four years ago. I contacted a friend who still lives in Kansas city and they said nothing has been done to it and it's still vacant! here's the info on the hauntings...

I don't suppose anyone that works for a DOT believes in ghosts? We could tell them that the spirits of David Hammond, Joseph Davenport, and other historic bridge builders had been loosed upon the world and that all historic truss bridges must be preserved and not demolished to prevent these spirits from endlessly haunting and tormenting those who decide to demolish those bridges!

A couple nights ago a few buddies of mine and me went down to this bridge. It was about 2 o'clock in the morning, and we were tired so we wanted to get home. But, one of my friends insisted that we go across this old bridge. I had heard stories of this bridge, but I had never seen anything with my own eyes. I would soon come to find out that this is the most haunted place in the state. We drove to one of he approches and got out of the car. We walked across the bridge and we didn't see anything. We stayed, for about 10 minutes before we decided to leave. As we walked back to the car, one of my friends screamed. He saw something. We all saw it. Standing at the end of the bridge, in front of our car, a little red haired girl. She looked about 9 or so. We stood there, and I asked her what he name was. All she said was "Jill". She didn't say anything else. She didn't take her eyes off of us. She slowly started walking our way, all the while huming some sort of tune. We BOOKED IT and ran across the other side. We ran all ran several hundred feet from the bridge until we finally stopped, out of breath. We waited about an hour until we decided to RUN across and get back to the car. When we approched the bridge "Jill" wasn't there anymore. When we got back into my car I re-adjusted my rear-view mirrors.. And I saw Jill. Still standing on the bridge. Waving us goodbye.

jklol. Never been there in my life.

My Father lives just west of the bridge, I've made many drives across it. Even during the day it has an eerie feeling. I haven't seen ghosts there but have had my encounters with the super natural in the past and don't intend to go looking for any on this bridge, yikes! Anyways, from what I understand via my dad and brother is that the county is presently reworking enoch's knob road, making it wider and straighter. They are re-routing the road just down from the bridge. I don't know if they're going to keep the old bridge in place as some historic "monument" like "brun's bridge" in Lonedell or if they intend to scrap it. Either way I'm told the project won't be complete for two years. So take pics and ghost hunt while you can...

Here is my story on Enochs Knob Brige:

A couple nights ago me and few buddies decided to check out the bridge. We had heard many stories about the bridge and we were up for a little scare. So we drove all the way up to highway 185 and found the road with a post where the sign was hung on but it was gone. We passed one house with a barn on one side and the hosue on the other side. When we got to the bridge we got really quite and rolled down the windows. We parked in the middle of the bridge and waited to see if we heard anything. After about 5 mins we got out and walked around. We kept hearing noices in the woods as if a little boy was yelling "Help!" from a distance but we couldnt make it out and the sound of a dog barking in the distance. Other than that we didnt hear or see anything else. We took many pictures and even videos of the trip but didnt get anything. After a while we gave up and drove back up to 185. We were all a little dissappointed and decided to give it one more shot so we headed back. On our way back we were just about to pull onto the bridge when we saw a truck sitting on the bridge. We couldnt tell what type of truck it was but it had the small yellow lights on the top so we knew it was a bigger truck. It followed us almost all the way to 185 when the truck stopped and turned off its lights like it was trying to scare us and hide. Now we have heard stories of the locals messing with people down there. My point proven. Yes i do think the bridge is hunted, BUT with the locals that mess with you, IT IS NOT WORTH YOUR TIME!!! I would go back if the locals would not mess with us like that to see and maybe actually hear something, but im not wasting my time because this isnt the first time ive heard of the locals trying to scare people... Sorry to be a downer on the bridge everyone but its not as much fun when you find out a couple of kids that live there are the ones messing with you to scare you..

aight so you can defenitley challenge all this wit science: we went out there, did the "honk the horn, flash your lights". dogs started barking everywhere. like they were surrounding us. there are dogs around the area tho. but idk bout THAT many. we heard a clack like two rocks were hitting together. bout 2 minutes after it stopped it started on the other side of the bridge. my friends said they saw the eyes but i didnt see any. then it sounded like someone was playing in the water... lightly splashing. it stopped. i told em to do it once again if they were still there. the result was a big ass pissed off splash like someone just kicked the water. then nothin after that. heard someonelightly walking in the woods. it actually coulda been someone or an animal. but it sounded like footsteps rather than animal feet. i saw a blue glowing circle it moved down to the left for a second then gone. my friends kept feeling things touching them. noone was standing next to each other. lastly, my freind was sitting in the car i was on the outside lookin over the bridge. all a sudden i hear a deep throated gasp rite next to my right cheek. i asked wtf was that. no one heard it cept my friend sittin in the car.

i've spent a lot of time at this bridge. my friend used to live on the same road and we used to walk down there in the middle of the night when we knew people were partying there and we'd sneak up and scare the living crap out of them! people are too easily scared when it comes to legends and myths of ghosts and such.

that being said, i HAVE had a few strange occurrences there myself which may or may not have been related to the supernatural. i've seen the red glowing eyes in the darkness that someone spoke of earlier, but the mind is a powerful thing and it can easily play tricks on itself.

and whoever said there are no dogs anywhere near the bridge is dead wrong. there's at least three that i know of, and probably more.

i'd have to say that overall it's a pretty cool place, and i cherish many memories of hanging out there. long live enochs knob road bridge! (and the chicken shack, for those of you who know what i'm talkin' about).

You need to get a mental evaluation, or stop doing drugs, if you've ever seen or talked to a ghost.

There is nothing there. I've spent more time on that bridge than all of you combined, and NEVER saw any ghosts, demon dogs, or hand prints, and certainly never talked to a ghost.

I have been there twice. Once early in the morning (When it was light out) and once after dark. You have to wait for the moon to go down before shit happens. Because if there is any light, they get scared. This happens around 2 am. I have seen and talked to a ghost on that bridge, if you try to make friends with them you will learn not to be scared. Usually other ghosts will come out if you are there long enough attempting to actually find them. But it's hard to catch any evidence out there with camera's because the energy drains the batteries. So if you are serious about the ghost hunting and not just up there to fuck around, then YES it is haunted.

I have been there probably 10 times, different parts of the day, for long periods of time and haven't heard or seen anything. Until you get some video proof, this shit isn't haunted.

I've been out there a few times with friends. Some of my friends believe in it and others don't. As of now I'm one of them that don't believe in the hauntings, because nothing has happend to me yet. I'll try some of the other things posted on here like sitting on the bridge and the demondog chant. I think it would be awesome to see the old ghost guy walking towards me. Hopefully something will happen. I really want to experience the "ghosts" or "hauntings". The only people that I know that have had an "experience" is my friends parents and their friends. They drove across the bridge, and took as many pictures as possible. In one of the pictures if you zoom in you can see a ghost guy walking across a bridge and some red orbs. I have yet to see the pictures, but if I do get a hold of it, I'll upload it on this later.

BS. The "little kid hand prints" are probably hallucinations from all that ganj you were smoking. This bridge is not haunted. Although very creepy.

This bridge IS NOT haunted. I've spent a lot of time here when I was in high school. We spent virtually every day and every weekend with countless parties. Although the bridge and area are creepy.

We've even tried doing the honk your horn 3 times and flash your lights 3 times at midnight, with no results.

i have been to that bridge a few times, the first time we were in my friends brand new truck and her lights on the window buttons started flickering on and off we didn't get out that time because we saw little red beady eyes as we were pulling up. the second time we came with a very large group and one of the girls was standing close to the rail and felt something try to pull her down. the third time me and a small group of friends decided to go play dare ya... my best friend sat on the very end of the bridge with us at the other end with no lights for 10 mins, when he came back he had what looked like blood all over his hands and shirt. another time i came out there with just one other person we stood in the middle of the bridge just looking at the water watching as it looked like a log was floating closer to us. the log dissapears and imediatly the bridge starts to shake, yes this bridge is old but nobody was moving on this thing to shake it the way it did. i dont know to many stories of what is haunting this bridge i only knew one of the guys that was involved in the drug death, they knew the guy and killed him because "drug deal gone bad" i guess... This bridge is very haunted!!! if you want to get chills down your spine go there and sit with no lights and no moon...

everyone on this page does need to grow up a bit.

i recently visited this bridge, it is not new, it was built in 1908. 4 people have dies, a young man jumped off the bridge one night after an enochs party, which always involves alcohol. a young boy fell off the bridge a VERY long time ago when the bridge was still ver unstable, the hole in which he fell through can still be seen, although there have been many attempts to cover it up. recently in 2005, a man was killed at the bridge by a few teenagers. the teens were visiting the bridge, the man was supposedly making meth somewhere near the bridge, the teens saw him and what he was doing, he gave them a hard time, possibly threating them, so, they killed him, they left him under the bridge for a few days, then came back and burned him under a car.

if you go here late at night many odd things will happen, dogs barking, although no dogs live any where near by, they start very far away and in a matter of seconds are surrounding you from all directions, no dogs can be seen unless "demondog" is chanted three times.

This bridge is fucking haunted!! My friends and I went down there around midnight and we saw a fucking ghost! IT was a man standing at the far end of the bridge clear as day! He was staring straight at us, and then he started walking toward us and we all freaked and ran for our lives! Whatever you do don't go alone and turn your car around BEFORE you go on the bridge! That way you can escape faster!!
