When I was researching the name for the McIntyre Bridge which was called the McDowell Bridge for the NRHP, I utilized old maps from the County. Bridges were often named for the people that lived in that area.
In this case I knew the name couldn't be McDowell because there lands were upstream, and in fact, it turned out this was corroborated by older residents, a road worker and the maps.
So if you are a Rutherford from that area, it just might be named after your family. The maps can sometimes be found online, scanned by various groups. Pretty cool research.
