Description
The first Vet's Oil Crossing was built in 1924 by the Iowa Bridge Company. It was part of the project to realign US Hwys. 71 and 16 as it originally ran parallel to the Des Moines River, beginning at the State Street Bridge and ending as it ran along the former Milwaukee Railroad towards the Black Bridge. The portal bracings were replaced with a three-rhombus Howe lattice design in 1939. The bridge was replaced by the second crossing in 1955 but not before the truss bridge was moved with rollers to its new home at State Street to replace the truss bridge there. It would serve traffic until its demolition and replacement in 1985.
