Description
The construction of this fixed bridge in 1996 permanently closed the Fort Point Channel to larger ships. The Northern Avenue Bridge remains operable as it has even a lower clearance than this bridge and is downstream of this bridge. However, the Congress Street Bridge and Summer Street Bridges are no longer operable and both have had most of their machinery removed, as no ship that would require either of those bridges to operate could traverse under this fixed bridge.
