I worked in the signal department for TP, MP, and UP. In the early '70s I believe, a freight train went off the tracks into the canal and killed the engineer and brakeman. A signalman in the Fort Worth signal shop built a system of insuring that the rails were aligned before the trains could proceed across the bridge. His name was Jimmy Burger. That is what happened. The train had a clear signal without the bridge being in proper position.
