Its official... This beautiful riveted historic through truss is going to be replaced by a boring ugly non-historic welded and bolted truss.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has a contractor currently replacing joints, repairing curbs, and placing a deck overlay on the US 60 Cumberland River Bridge at Smithland. Work on the $991,424 project is expected to be complete by August 15, 2009.

I think that once they finish the new bridge at the Tennessee river, they'll move over to this one and either fix it up or build a new one. Sad thing is, even if they do, it'll be several years before they build a new one.

This bridge is in serious need of replacement. Our school children cross this bridge twice daily. it is in the center of our county and is a danger to anyone crossing this bridge. There are no plans to replace this bridge and it is clearly a danger to everyone. this is a real concern to me and has been for a very long time.
