Ferry crossing, connecting Houchins Ferry Road to Ollie Road.

This part of the Green River used to be connected to the Ohio River by a series of locks and dams. Since the lock at Brownsville KY was closed, the ferry is landlocked. Any maintenance has to be done in place.

It is looking likely that the ferry will never be placed back in service at this location. The low level dam several miles down river that created a slackwater pool for the ferry to operate has failed. Because there is no longer any commercial navigation on the upper Green River, repair is unlikely.

Houchins Ferry shut down Oct 1st, 2013 when the government shutdown began, and has never re-opened. The ferry itself was pulled out of the river and rebuilt, and was recently used to replace the Green River ferry. The old Green River ferry will be rebuilt and put into "spare" status. It's not known when, or even if, the Houchins Ferry will ever reopen.

Description says "Ferry is landlocked". Certainly a wide load trailer could haul in another ferry. If 100 ton houses can be moved by road, then so could a replacement boat.
