I am afraid that this one might have been closed - or worse. You don't see a Bedstead Whipple Pony everyday...
Actually, I suspect that it was a regular Bedstead that had some extra verticals added. I need to revisit the bridge and document it properly.
I suspect that Gene is right about parts being added. It looks to me that the county "Whipplefied" this one by adding extra verticals. I need to revisit and reevaluate this one to make sure the verticals are not original. I have learned a lot about bridges since I visited this one.
I hope that Republic County continues to maintain these unique little Bedsteads - or at least allows them to be preserved someday.
I think there were parts added to this bridge. For what reason, remains a mystery.
I am not certain how to clasify this pin connected pony truss. This does appear to be a variation on the Bedstead design, similar to others in Republic County. Note that the diagonal members on this bridge appear to interesect three vertical members.
Webmaster's note: The photos that were here have been incorporated into the main site.
Yes, I was noticing that the NBI had indicated that the bridge was closed. In this region, closure can either mean that the bridge is going to be replaced immediately, or that it's going to rust in peace until its eventual collapse. In some cases, it can also indicate that it will soon be transferred to a private owner who will then have to assume responsibility for it.
