I think you are right on it CV...

Most likely the wrought iron bridge was replaced in the 20's or 30's (Maybe even the 40's) with a much heavier state designed bridge.

This is an 1898 picture of the Main Street bridge. I have trouble believing it lasted until 1984.

Was this one replaced with another through truss that lasted into the '80s?

I am anonymous from below. The site in the last message does not list the date of construction for the old bridge, but in other cases it can be useful.

Sheldon:

If you want to research Historic Bridges in Kansas, the following website is a great source.

http://khri.kansasgis.org/

Just select a county, and then type "bridge" in the space marked historic name. While this site does not list every lost or extant historic bridge in Kansas, it does include about 1300 of them.

Anyone know when the old bridge was built?

I agree - this bridge should not be on here. The old bridge was a Pratt through truss with two Pratt pony approaches according to the KSHS: http://khri.kansasgis.org/index.cfm?tab=details&in=127-1180-...

Sorry, no pictures.

As a side note, Nathan's Cartoon is one of the funniest things I have ever seen on this site.

Yeah, well someday your grandkids will learn about this bridge and be amazed, They will say things like 'It was just a slab of concrete! Wow! Weren't you afraid it would crack and fall down while you were on it? SCARRY!'
