Been over this one on a few occasions. Will have to check it out the next time I am over that way. Hopefully they didn't destroy the historic integrity of it.

The bridge was never scheduled for demolition. Renovations started in December 2010 and are about ready to wrap up with opening scheduled for December 15, 2011.

The bid was back in the beginning of October. So it should begin in the next few months. After searching online I found that it is scheduled to be closed to traffic Nov 16-Dec. 15. The removal and construction will be done one side at a time. So the bridge or parts of it will there until the Nov. 16th when they will do some final construction and open the new bridge officailly on Dec. 16th

I also remembered this weekend that the abutments and main concrete arches will remain. They are replacing the deck, beams and vertical column supports. The new bridge will have the same look with bigger columns to carry more traffic.

Do you know when this is supposed to start?

This bridge as seen better days and is scheduled for demolition. It's an amazing bridge but it appears that increases in traffic and expected future growth necessitate its replacement. I saw no pictures were posted and want to post these so it can live on.

Also there was a homeless person living on one of the arches where is stems from the abutment. He wasn't there at the time but his entire life was. I have encountered other homeless people at other bridges who turned out to be friendly. I was wondering if any of you bridge hunters have had any interesting run-ins with homeless people
