INDOT closed this bridge again today over "structural safety concerns" due to "more corrosion in the structural steel than was previously documented."
This one is open again. Crossed over it in the afternoon of 12/28/11.
Checked on this one at dusk 12/13/11 from the Bowling Green side and found a backhoe and compressor parked about the middle of the bridge with no one in sight. Presumably the backhoe has a jackhammer attachment, which is why the compressor. No visible workings.
An Indiana Economic Digest article from Nov 21 states that it is hoped the bridge can be opened in early January 2012. Also states that contractors will not be required to stop for the holidays, and that no extensions will be granted for holiday work suspensions.
A crack was found in one of the gusset plates. Hopefully no other problems will be found and this can be quickly repaired.
This comes less than 3 weeks after the IN42 Eel River Bridge was closed after being struck by a garbage truck. I found nothing to suggest that it is still closed.
Both of these State Highway Department Parker trusses are listed as SELECT in the recent Indiana Historic Bridge Inventory. Also both are listed on the National Register, which seems unusual for state owned bridges. Apparently there is some local interest in these spans.
This bridge is closed to traffic following identification of a crack during inspection.
