Ottawa Bridge (Old)

Illinois River Bridge @ Ottawa

Second Illinois River crossing @ Ottawa, built 1885-replaced 1910. It replaced a toll bridge (later free) built in 1854-55 that had settlement problems. In 1906 this second bridge was condemned--crossings were made by a ferry in summer and the RR bridge downstream in winter until the third bridge was opened in 1910. Both the 1885 and 1910 structures accommodated streetcars

Replaced a toll bridge built in 1855 by the Illinois River Bridge Corporation. The city, some townships, and the county bought the toll bridge in in 1877. It was 920' long and had a 30' clearance above the river. The toll booth was located at the south end. It began to sink and was replaced by the 1885 bridge.
