Description

Ambitious, costly, half-mile long viaduct running roughly from Chicago Avenue to Clybourn Avenue, incorporated two bascule bridges across both branches of the North Branch Chicago River, and approach viaducts over Goose Island, Halsted Street, and Division Street. The bascule bridges were of the double-leaf fixed trunion design typical in Chicago at the time. Originally signed as US 32, later US 34, then no numbered highway at all after US 34 was rerouted into the Chicago Loop. Construction of freeways in the 1960s had taken away most of Ogden Viaduct's traffic, so when concrete chunks began falling from it onto Halsted Street on March 24, 1992, it was closed completely and demolished. Today Ogden Avenue remains, running southwestward from its 1992 truncation at Chicago Avenue, still carrying the US 34 designation starting at Harlem Avenue in Berwyn.

Good photos in links below, including art-deco bas-relief artistic detailing.
