Description

Bridge carrying St. Charles Air Line over Indiana Avenue. This bridge was built in 1968, so traffic on the Illinois Central/Canadian National mainline to New Orleans could easily access the St. Charles Air Line. This enabled freight trains easy interconnection to other rail lines. It also let Amtrak trains from New Orleans and Carbondale go to Union Station, instead of Central Station, which was closed in 1972.

Dimensions are estimates.
