The west approach

This is a bridge that drivers have dreaded for years, hoping to not meet a large truck coming from the other direction. The concrete abutment is as scary today as it was in the heyday of the Lincoln Highway.

The Rock Island Bridge

Looking west from under the C&NW Bridge. Westbound drivers go under the subject bridge then immediately vault up and over the Rock Island Railroad. Old photos, from before this bridge was replaced and the grade lengthened, show that these bridges, in sequence, made much more of a white-knuckle experience for Lincoln Highway drivers back then.

UPRR Crosses Indian Creek & the Rock Island RR

These bridges are just west of the subject bridge and parallel the Lincoln Highway bridge over the same obstacles. The Union Pacific acquired the Chicago & North Western Railway in the mid 1990's.

Lincoln Highway C&NW Bridge
Posted July 22, 2008, by Chad Kelham (ckelham [at] ballstate [dot] bsu [dot] edu)

This bridge(ex-C&NW, now UP) without a doubt is something any motorist would want to brace themselves for (especially with the concrete abutments at either approach ) & makes for one adrenalin-fueled adventure for anyone who wants to travel the Lincoln Highway in this part of Iowa.

All around, awesome pics!!
